BOOK REVIEWS AND AUTHORS - Guest Post by Annette Oppenlander

How Book Reviews Impact an Author

Guest Post by Annette Oppenlander, author of A Different Truth

I may be in the minority when I say they shouldn’t. At least not in the sense that an author engages with reviewers and argues about a critique. Because commenting about negative reviews is unbecoming an author and does nothing to change the mind of the reader. Just the opposite. Human nature has him dig in his heels. As a bonus other readers become witness to this public spat.

But authors are human and many, unless they’re maybe bestselling authors with millions of books in print, are hypersensitive when it comes to their work. So they await reviews like they awaited grades in school: with apprehension and excitement.

I do believe in always learning from mistakes. And if a review provides constructive comments, this information may be invaluable to the writer. To take this a step further, if an author receives consistently poor reviews it may be time to examine his writing. In the time of self-publishing, anything can be thrown out there. A first or second draft turns into an eBook and reviews reflect the quality of the work. Readers are smart. They know because they read a lot. And they are not easily mislead.

Overwhelmingly positive reviews likely boost an author’s confidence. What he’s created is well received. The quality of writing is good. The story resonates.

In the end, reviews should be a tiny part of an author’s life. Authors must focus on their next book and realize that writing like any art is a matter of taste and that people will have varying opinions. It’s okay, it’s healthy, it’s what a diverse society is all about.

Along with his best friend, Tom, he is plunged into a world where rules are everything and disobedience not an option. Andy doesn't care about politics and grows increasingly irritated when Tom openly supports the peace movement. Contradicting the establishment and provoking their bullying classmates is dangerous.

But when Tom is attacked and the school calls it an unfortunate accident, Andy makes a choice that not only threatens his future but his very life.
